Biography

James Freedman is currently the lead product counsel for Google AI for Developers (Gemini API & Google AI Studio) and Google Colab, among other AI-related services. He’s also served as product counsel for Gemini (fka Bard) since its inception and is on the core teams responsible for updating the Google Terms of Service and crafting company-wide legal templates and model clauses.
Previously, James was the lead product counsel for Google’s AI Test Kitchen, NotebookLM, and ARCore, and the lead commercial counsel for the company’s cloud gaming initiatives (Stadia and Immersive Stream for Games).
Before joining Google, James was Senior Counsel, Legal & Business Affairs, at Warner Bros. Entertainment, supporting the technology department. In addition to creating templates and negotiating commercial agreements, he managed the company’s global terms of service, e-signature and web accessibility policies, and DMCA safe harbor compliance.
Earlier in his career, James clerked for Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, and was an intellectual property litigator based in Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe’s Silicon Valley office.
James is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Stanford Law School. At Stanford, he was the Stanford Law Review’s inaugural Senior Online Editor, on the executive board of the Stanford Technology Law Review, and Co-President of the Stanford Law & Technology Association. He externed for Associate Justice Joyce L. Kennard of the California Supreme Court and was the 2011 recipient of the American Intellectual Property Law Association’s Robert C. Watson Award. Before law school, he was a journalist and an editor at The Huffington Post.
