NFTs and Games: Fad or Opportunity?

NFTs and Games: Fad or Opportunity?

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) shot into the public eye last year, in part, due to the enormous success of NBA Top Shot, a blockchain-based trading card system that generated hundreds of millions in gross sales (source: The Information). While musicians, sports teams, artists and brands have moved fast to capitalize on what is perceived as a huge new revenue-generating opportunity in NFTs, the game industry has been slower to jump on the NFT train as there has been highly publicized backlash from gamers and growing consensus among major developers that NFTs don’t offer anything they can’t already have with existing tools. While most of the major studios are not on board, there is a growing group of well-funded indie studios and technology partners committing to the space. This panel will break down the ins and outs of NFTs and discuss best practices, challenges and the opportunities for games businesses in this exciting new sector.
